Visit Alhambra And Take A Journey Through Time

Exploring Granada means experiencing the Alhambra, a palace-fortress that stands as a symbol of the city’s rich Moorish heritage. For solo travelers, the Alhambra offers a deeply personal journey through time. The Alhambra’s grandeur is best appreciated alone, allowing you to move at your own pace and take in every detail without distraction. The experience becomes more than just a sightseeing trip; it turns into a meditation on time, the impermanence of empires, and the lasting beauty of art and architecture. A magical use of space, light, water and decoration characterizes this most sensual piece of architecture.

It is also the home to some of the city’s most significant historical sites, such as the Parish of Ss. Justus and Pastor, Cuarto Real de Santo Domingo, or Museo de los Perfumes. The narrow streets, cobblestone paths, and ancient buildings create an atmosphere that is both nostalgic and timeless.

Embrace The Spirit Of Flamenco

Granada is a city that pulses with the rhythm of flamenco and there is no better way to feel the soul of Spain than to attend a performance in the many venues. The historic locations in which flamenco is performed are just as cherished as the art form itself. Most towns across Spain are homes to at least one flamenco club. The most visible flamenco venues, however, are called “tablaos” and charge an entrance fee (around 25€), often including a couple of drinks or tapas. The dance developed from various traditions from Europe, Asia and the Middle East, so it comes as no surprise that it continues to blend with other forms of music.

Dobla de Oro, or “Golden Doubloon,” is more than just a tourist route; it’s a cultural pilgrimage that connects the Alhambra, the crowning jewel of Moorish architecture, with the heart of Granada’s historic Albaicín and Realejo neighborhoods. The route’s name is symbolic, referring to the gold coin used during the Nasrid period, which reflects the richness of the history and art that you encounter along the way. The Dobla de Oro allows visitors to appreciate the continuity of Islamic art and culture in Granada, as well as the transformation of the city over time.

The Cuarto Real de Santo Domingo is a monument of exceptional historical and artistic significance, officially declared a Cultural Heritage Site in 1919. Since 1990, it has been owned by the City Council of Granada. While the Alhambra is the crown jewel of Granada’s Islamic architecture, the Cuarto Real offers a more intimate look into the Nasrid dynasty world – a place where art, history, and culture come together. It dates back to the 13th century, making it one of the oldest remnants of the Nasrid period in Granada. Originally built as a palace for the Nasrid rulers, this elegant structure served as a royal retreat where the sultans could escape the formalities of the Alhambra and enjoy the peace of their gardens.

Granada’s Tapas Culture: A Culinary Adventure For Solo Travelers

No exploration of Granada is complete without indulging in the city’s famous tapas culture. For solo travelers, Granada’s tapas scene is a culinary adventure that offers a taste of the city’s rich gastronomic traditions. The best part? Tapas are often complimentary with your drink order, making it easy to sample a wide variety of dishes. I have tried some of the best restaurants in Granada, recommended by locals, which you can find below.

Casa 22 is situated on Navas Street, just steps away from Granada’s Town Hall, in one of the city’s most vibrant areas for dining and enjoying tapas. Whether you’re a local or a visitor, this unique spot offers a memorable experience. Pictured below are the free rice tapas, (different tapas are included for free in every restaurant when you order a drink), white Tuna belly with tomatoes, avocado and roast pepper, followed by Cassata (Italian style ice-cream).

Los Diamantes is a small culinary treasure known for the exceptional seafood, and lively tapas scene, that has earned a reputation as one of the city’s must-visit dining spots. Over the decades, it has expanded to several locations across the city, but its heart remains at the Plaza Nueva, where locals and tourists alike gather to enjoy what many consider the best fried fish in town. In Granada, you can savor everything from traditional Spanish food to innovative fusion cuisine. Each stop is an opportunity to engage with locals and experience the warmth and hospitality that Spain is known for. And if you want to experience more dining opportunities, Plaza del Carmen is a must-see. It’s a place where the city’s history comes alive, where its culture thrives, and where the people come together to celebrate life. During the city’s annual Feria de Granada, Plaza del Carmen plays a key role in the festivities, serving as a gathering place for parades, dances, and public performances.

For me, Granada is a place that speaks to the soul. As a solo traveler, you connect with the city through a mix of experiences that are both personal and universal, considering all the Islamic influences throughout the city. It is extremely vibrant and it offers a journey that is as unique and unforgettable as you are. It welcomes you, inviting you to be part of its story, to leave your mark on its ancient streets, and carry a piece of its spirit with you wherever you go.
