Lilly's Reptile Rescue Corn Snake
The importance of protecting our wildlife, especially reptiles, cannot be overstated. These creatures play a vital role in maintaining ecological balance and biodiversity. Unfortunately, many reptile species face threats from habitat loss, climate change, and human activities. Lilly’s Reptile Rescue stands as a beacon of hope, working tirelessly to safeguard these vulnerable species and raise awareness about the significance of wildlife conservation.

In the heart of Scarborough, UK, Dave Bigsby has transformed his passion for reptiles into a sanctuary of hope and care. As the founder of Lilly’s Reptile Rescue, Dave’s dedication to protecting and rehabilitating a diverse range of reptile species is nothing short of inspiring. From majestic snakes and bearded dragons to enchanting chameleons and turtles, every resident at the sanctuary finds a safe haven under Dave’s compassionate care.

Dave’s journey into the world of reptile rescue began during his time as a handyman at Scarborough SeaLIFE Centre. “When I was working at the SeaLIFE Centre, I encountered a Red-Tailed Boa named Lilly who was brought in as a rescue. Tragically, Lilly succumbed to aggressive cancer and passed away. It was a heartbreaking moment that deeply affected me. In her memory, I made a solemn vow to assist and save all her fellow reptiles in need” says Dave for Iconic Magazine Online. It was this particular moment that he discovered his innate connection with these fascinating creatures and realized the urgent need for a dedicated rescue facility. Today, Dave’s shop serves as a refuge for reptiles in need, offering them a second chance at life and a future filled with care and compassion. “There have been numerous instances where we’ve rescued snakes, some even found in dustbins. One memorable case involved rehabilitating a snake that had sustained burns on its nose and body.”

At Lilly’s Reptile Rescue, each rescue story is a testament to the power of love and commitment. Dave’s hands-on approach ensures that every reptile receives personalized attention, tailored care, and a nurturing environment to thrive. From providing specialized diets and medical treatment to creating enriching habitats, the sanctuary prioritizes the well-being and happiness of its residents above all else. “One of the significant challenges we encounter in our rehabilitation efforts is covering the veterinary expenses, especially since we are a newly established non-profit rescue organization.” To help out with the costs, we helped Dave create a funding campaign on Buy Me A Coffee. By becoming a Member for only 3£/month you can enjoy hands-on encounters with the rescued reptiles in a safe and educational environment, personalised guidance on caring for your reptiles, information about reptiles ready for rehoming and more!

But Dave’s mission extends beyond just rescue and rehabilitation. He actively engages with the community, educating people about responsible pet ownership, the importance of wildlife conservation, and the unique needs of reptiles. Through workshops, outreach programs, and educational initiatives, Dave strives to foster a deeper appreciation and understanding of these incredible creatures.

Snakes often face misconceptions that label them as aggressive creatures. These myths can lead to fear and misunderstanding, sometimes resulting in unnecessary harm to these fascinating reptiles. It’s crucial to educate people about the true nature of snakes, highlighting their important role in ecosystems and their generally non-aggressive behavior towards humans. “Snakes are not slimy creatures, nor are they naturally aggressive. In fact, you’re more likely to be bitten by a dog or a cat. Education is crucial in dispelling myths and understanding these fascinating reptiles” says Dave.
