“Oklahoma Weekend Getaway: A Local’s Guide” is written by Carly Nickole who aims to help people feel better about themselves and build the life they’ve always wanted.

Let’s take a tour of Oklahoma’s best locations to visit, starting in the small town of Chickasha – a continuously growing city full of new and improved businesses, perfect for your next Oklahoma weekend getaway!

FUN FACT: Chickasha, Oklahoma, and a few other local towns including El Reno and Stillwater are where the newest 2024 Twisters movie was filmed!

For Something Sweet, Visit Rock Island Candy Company in Chickasha

I have to tell you about this candy shop first because it’s definitely within your travel budget, and it’s a perfect stop for your Oklahoma weekend getaway! Starting out in a candy trailer before transitioning into a brick and mortar, Rock Island Candy Company is owned and operated by Lora Gerstner and has been a favorite among the community ever since she opened up.

Although this candy store is small compared to other options in Oklahoma, it packs a lot of punch and is sure to help alleviate your sweetest tooth. Not only does Lora sell old-fashioned options like candy cigarettes, salt water taffy, and pop rocks, but she also keeps trending goodies like crystal candies, juicy blasters, and pickle-flavored cotton candy in stock so you never miss out on whatever you might be craving! If you’re feeling overwhelmed by all of the delicious treats and you don’t know what to try, you can’t go wrong with her chocolates. As a Chickasha local, this is one of my favorite businesses, and it’s perfect for the youngest kids to the oldest adults.

Try Wine Tasting at Shakespeare Wine Company

After opening in June of 2022, this unique wine shop became the hangout point for a lot of middle-aged couples and friend groups in Chickasha. One thing that sets Shakespeare Wine Co. apart from other wine shops is its unique and funky decorations. With its light-hearted atmosphere and close-knit environment, you’ll be made to feel just like a local regular when you visit. The paintings and pieces of artwork hung throughout the shop are almost all from local Chickasha artists, which is why I think this would be a good place to visit on your Oklahoma weekend getaway, for a true taste of the local community. You can sit inside while you enjoy tasting the different wines (all made from Oklahoma grapes), and then make your way outside to the patio to enjoy some laughs with the locals.

For a Southern Greeting, Visit Broken Bow

Nestled in southeastern Oklahoma, Broken Bow Lake is a hidden gem that offers something for everyone. I used to live 40 minutes away from this beauty, so I think it’s a fantastic place to explore.

The scenery is gorgeous! With lush greenery, rolling hills, and the sparkling waters of Broken Bow Lake, this place creates a serene backdrop for any outdoor activity! Whether you’re hiking through Beavers Bend State Park or simply enjoying a picnic by the lake, the natural beauty is absolutely mesmerizing, and you’ll never want to leave.

For adventure enthusiasts, Broken Bow is a playground. I went kayaking on the clear waters of the lake and I’ve been zip-lining through the trees. There are countless trails for hiking and biking, and I especially enjoy a stroll along the scenic paths. Fishing and horseback riding are also popular, making it easy to tailor your experience to your interests.

…Or, maybe while you’re down and in Hochatown, you can try Bigfoot Axe Throwing! I know a lot of people who’ve tried throwing their first axe down there.

With over 59,000 acres of ancient mountains dotting a sea of prairie, the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge in Lawton, OK is home to free-range American bison herds, prairie dogs, Texas Longhorn cattle, bobcats, and coyotes. A common favorite amongst the crowd is Mount Scott – a place I visit regularly with friends and family. It makes for a nice motorcycle ride or a fun hike. You can enjoy the view of multiple lakes, stunning rock formations, and miles of picturesque hiking trails from the top.

Have Your Breath Taken Away at Natural Falls State Park

Surrounded by towering trees and vibrant foliage, this park in Colcord is a haven for nature lovers like me. The diverse plant life, especially in spring and summer, creates a lush, green environment that’s perfect for hiking and exploring!

FUN FACT:  “Where the Red Fern Grows” was filmed here, making it a familiar-looking scene to many who visit!

The park’s centerpiece is a 77-foot waterfall, which cascades dramatically into a serene pool below. The sight and sound of the water rushing down are mesmerizing and create a peaceful atmosphere.

I cannot pick a favorite out of these beautiful scenic places. Oklahoma is a diverse and vibrant state that offers a unique blend of culture, history, and natural beauty. You should definitely visit at least once, and there are so many beautiful options for you to choose from during your Oklahoma weekend getaway.
